Extreme heat accelerates corrosion, thus shortening battery life. In addition, high heat causes battery fluid to evaporate more rapidly; hence, more frequent distilled water top-ups are required for low-maintenance batteries.

Can electrical gadgets that operate when the key is turned off affect the performance of a battery?

Key-off electrical loads are common. The vehicle's electrical system is adjusted to accommodate this extra drain.
